Fargo, North Dakota
Fargo, together with its twin city, Moorhead, Minnesota, constitutes the heart of the Fargo–Moorhead metropolitan statistical area, which had a combined population of 248,591 in 2020. Founded in 1871 on the floodplain of the Red River of the North, Fargo has evolved into a pivotal cultural, retail, healthcare, educational, and industrial hub for southeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. The city is home to North Dakota State University (NDSU), a key institution contributing to the area's identity and economy.
The city has experienced steady and substantial growth, particularly since the mid-1980s, with most new residential developments concentrated in the south and southwest areas, such as West Fargo, due to geographical limitations on the north side. Major retail districts in the southwest have also undergone significant expansion. Downtown Fargo has undergone a transformation, partly due to investments from both the city and private developers in the Renaissance Zone.

Many older neighborhoods, including Horace Mann, have either maintained their vitality or have been revitalized through housing rehabilitation initiatives aimed at strengthening the city’s core. NDSU has rapidly developed into a prominent research university, with many students residing off-campus in the nearby Roosevelt neighborhood. The university has extended its footprint into downtown, establishing academic facilities and student housing. Additionally, NDSU Bison Football has garnered a strong following among local residents. Recently, Fargo has also emerged as a regional hub for technology and healthcare, bolstered by Microsoft and Sanford Health both establishing regional campuses in the city center.
Since the late 1990s, the Fargo-Moorhead Metropolitan Statistical Area has consistently reported one of the lowest unemployment rates among metropolitan statistical areas in the United States. Notably, on July 14, 2023, a tragic incident occurred when 37-year-old Mohamad Barakat opened fire on police officers responding to an unrelated traffic accident. This attack resulted in the death of one officer and injuries to two others before Barakat was shot and killed by an officer at the scene.
